01 · Getting Started
Appointments, prep, what to bring
Do I need an appointment?
add
No appointment is necessary. We welcome walk-ins during business hours: Monday–Friday 11am–8:30pm and Saturday 11am–5pm. Closed Sundays. Most customers are served within 15–20 minutes of arrival.
What should I bring?
add
Bring your current vehicle registration, a valid driver's license or ID, and payment (cash, credit, or debit). Make sure your vehicle has at least ¼ tank of gas and has been driven recently — a warm engine is a passing engine.
What should I do to prepare my vehicle?
add
Drive for at least 20 minutes before testing to warm up the engine and emission systems. Make sure your check engine light is off, you have at least ¼ tank of gas, and the car hasn't been sitting for weeks.
When do I need a smog check?
add
California requires smog checks every 2 years for most vehicles during registration renewal, when selling your vehicle, or when moving to California from another state. Check your DMV renewal notice for the specific deadline.
02 · STAR & DMV
Referrals, certifications, why STAR matters
Do I need a STAR smog check?
add
Check your DMV renewal notice. If it says 'STAR' — or if your vehicle has failed a smog test at another location — you need a STAR-certified station like Sunrise Smog. STAR stations are specially authorized to test high-emitter and DMV-referred vehicles.
What is STAR certification and why does it matter?
add
STAR (Smog Test and Repair) certification is issued by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair to facilities that meet the state's highest standards. Only about 15% of smog stations qualify. STAR stations can test high-emitter and DMV-referred vehicles that others simply cannot.
What happens after my vehicle passes?
add
You'll receive your smog certificate immediately, and we electronically submit results to the DMV within minutes. Your certificate is valid for 90 days — no DMV trip required.
03 · Pricing & Payment
Costs, fees, and accepted methods
How much does a smog check cost?
add
Our smog checks start at $55 plus state certificate fees ($8.25). The total depends on your vehicle type and any additional services needed. We provide upfront pricing with no hidden fees — you'll know the exact cost before we begin.
What forms of payment do you accept?
add
We accept cash, all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), and debit cards. Payment is due at the time of service.
Can I get a pre-inspection to see if my car will pass?
add
Yes. We offer free pre-smog inspections (normally $55) to check your vehicle's readiness before the official test. This diagnostic identifies issues that could cause a failure — potentially saving you time and money on unnecessary repairs.
04 · Vehicles & Failures
What we test, and what happens if you fail
What vehicles do you test?
add
We test gasoline-powered vehicles from model year 2000 and newer. As a STAR-certified station, we can also test high-emitter vehicles and those that have failed at other locations. We do not test vehicles older than 2000 or motorcycles.
What if my vehicle fails?
add
We'll provide a detailed report explaining exactly what needs to be addressed. Because we're a test-only facility — we don't perform repairs — our diagnosis is completely unbiased. We'll explain your options and can recommend qualified repair shops nearby.
Do you test vehicles with check engine lights?
add
Vehicles with an illuminated check engine light automatically fail the smog test. The light must be off before testing. If it's on, have the issue diagnosed and repaired by a qualified mechanic before visiting us.
How long does a smog check take?
add
Most tests complete in 15–20 minutes. The actual testing takes only a few minutes — the rest is paperwork and vehicle prep.
